Free vs Paid Online Courses: What Is the Difference?

The Audit Option (Coursera & edX)

Both Coursera and edX allow free "audit" access to course videos and readings. Auditing is genuinely useful for building knowledge - you can watch all lectures and download resources. However, you will not receive a certificate, cannot submit graded assignments, and may lose access to course materials after a set period (typically 6-12 weeks for Coursera). If your goal is a verifiable credential, you must pay.

Udemy: Per-Course Purchasing

Udemy has no free tier beyond short previews. However, its frequent promotional sales bring most courses to A$19.99-A$29.99 - making it the most affordable option for a paid course with lifetime access. Purchased courses remain accessible indefinitely, including any future updates the instructor adds.

Khan Academy: Genuinely Free

Khan Academy is entirely free, forever, with no premium tier. For foundational maths, science, computing, and economics content, it represents exceptional value. The limitation is scope - it does not cover professional certification territory that paid platforms address.

Skillshare & LinkedIn Learning: Subscription Gates

Both platforms operate on subscription models with limited free access. Skillshare offers a free tier with access to selected classes. LinkedIn Learning offers a 1-month free trial. Beyond those windows, all content requires a paid subscription. Both offer strong value if you plan to take multiple courses per month - poor value if you complete only one or two courses per year.

When Free Is Enough

Free access is sufficient when your goal is knowledge acquisition rather than credential acquisition - for example, exploring a new field before committing, refreshing foundational knowledge, or supplementing formal study. For career-facing credentials, the audit or free tier rarely delivers the certificate that employers can verify.
